How To Say Affirmations That Really Work

Mar 12, 2019

Research has shown that we have between 41,000 and 51, 000 thoughts per day and that in most people 80% of those thoughts are negative. It is also understood that most of our daily thoughts come, not from our conscious, but our subconscious mind.

Using your conscious awareness you can reprogram your subconscious mind, reducing those automatic negative thoughts, with the practice of Positive Affirmations.

What Are Positive Affirmations?

Positive affirmations are the practice of repetitive self -talk. They are short statements you can use to describe how you want to be or how you want circumstances to be, as though it is already true or on it’s way to becoming true.

Though there is quite a buzz about this practice, now widely used amongst top athletes, psychotherapists and non-religious spiritual healers, this concept is not new. Positive affirmations are very closely related to the practice of mantras used in ancient religions (such Buddhism) to re-wire the negative thought patterns in our subconscious mind.

Simply explained, today many people train their bodies through repetitive practice to improve their performance. Well, positive affirmations are a practice for training the mind.

How Can Positive Affirmations Help Me?

You can apply the practice of positive affirmations to any situation you wish to change for the better.

For example,

  • Bad habits
  • Anxiety
  • Anger

and much more

Recent research has shown that the practice of affirmations has been effective in the raising of self -esteem, decreasing depressive symptoms and negative thinking.

Writing Positive Affirmations

  1.  Decide what you wish to change
  2. Write a short sentence (no more than 5/6 words long) that affirm in a positive way what you want, as though you already have it. Avoid using negative words such as NO, NOT, etc

Example:

A self Improvement

  •  'I AM CONFIDENT', not 'I will be confident', 'I am not nervous' or 'I hope to be confident one day'.   'I AM CONFIDENT'.

An improvement in circumstance

  •  'MY (health, wealth, etc) IS BETTER' not 'My health will be better' or 'I want better health'. 'MY HEALTH IS BETTER'.

Saying Positive Affirmations

There are a number of things you can do to make your affirmations more effective. The subconscious mind responds best to repetition, emotion and images so:

  1. Get yourself into an Alpha state of mind. This is the state you are in during meditation or light hypnosis. You achieve this state naturally upon first waking and just before you fall asleep, so these are the best times to say your affirmations.
  2. Say your affirmation aloud 3-5 x (If you say your affirmations throughout the day, ensure you are in a relaxed alpha state first).
  3. Visualise yourself or your situation, as you would like it to be (as though you already have it), whilst repeating your affirmation.
  4. Ensure that you are feeling good whilst repeat your affirmation. Feel the emotions you would feel with that preferred you or that preferred circumstance.

If you find that you are not feeling good whilst saying your affirmation, rephrase it so it feels more comfortable to you.

For example: (instead of) 'I AM CONFIDENT'.

(You could say) 'I AM BECOMING MORE CONFIDENT' or 'I AM MOVING TOWARDS CONFIDENCE'.
